Steel for Portland Job Sites, Fifteen Minutes Away

Goldstein Steel has supplied Portland from our Scarborough yard since 1947. We are about fifteen minutes down 295, which means a Portland crew can place an order in the morning and have material on site the same day rather than waiting on a distributor from out of state.

We stock structural beams and columns, tubing, pipe, plate and flat stock, galvanized products and drainage grating. We cut to your measurements, and we deliver into Portland and the surrounding towns. If you would rather pick up, the yard is open Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm.

We sell to everyone. General contractors and commercial builders, steel fabricators and welders, body shops, property managers, and homeowners who need one piece cut properly. There is no minimum you need to hit before we will talk to you.

What We Supply to Portland

Beams and columns for new builds, additions and load-bearing retrofits.

Round, square and rectangular tube for framing, railings and supports.

Standard and stainless pipe for construction, plumbing and mechanical work.

Zinc-coated stock that holds up to salt air and winter road treatment.

Bar grating, trench drain covers and load-rated panels.

Cut to your measurements, any quantity, usually while you wait.

Who We Supply in Portland

General contractors and builders

Portland is the busiest construction market in the state, and most of it is renovation rather than raw ground. We keep beams, columns and plate on the shelf so a change in the field does not turn into a week of downtime.

Fabricators and welding shops

Order by the piece or by the bundle. We cut to length so your shop time goes into fabrication instead of breaking down stock.

Auto and body shops

We carry advanced high-strength steel, galvanized panel stock and tubing, and we sell to the trade and to the public. Most suppliers will not take a small order from a body shop. We will.

Property owners and homeowners

A lintel over a new opening, a repair on a railing, a piece of plate for a trailer. Come in, tell us what you are doing, and we will help you pick the right material and cut it to size.

Built for What Portland Throws at Steel

Salt air on the peninsula

Anything within reach of the harbor lives in salt. Commercial Street, the piers, the East End, exposed rooftop work. Galvanized is usually the right call on the waterfront, and it is worth the small premium the first time rather than doing the job twice. We will tell you when plain carbon steel is fine and when it is not.

Old buildings, new loads

A lot of Portland work is putting modern loads into nineteenth-century brick and timber. Removing a bearing wall, hanging a mezzanine in a warehouse, opening a storefront in the Old Port. That work needs beams and columns sized right and cut clean, often in short pieces that have to come up a narrow stair.

Tight sites and narrow streets

Peninsula deliveries are not open job sites. We would rather know in advance that the truck has one spot on a one-way street for twenty minutes than find out on arrival. Tell us the constraint when you order and we will plan the drop around it.

Road salt, five months a year

Everything that touches a Portland winter takes chloride. It matters for railings, stair stringers, trailer repairs and anything at grade. Ask us about coating before the material leaves the yard, not after the first spring.

Portland Steel Questions

Yes. Portland is one of our regular delivery areas, along with South Portland, Westbrook, and the rest of Cumberland County. Tell us the address and the access when you order.

Yes. The yard at 36 Running Hill Rd is open Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, and it is about fifteen minutes from downtown Portland. Call ahead with your sizes and we will have it cut.

Yes, and we will do some fabrication as well. Bring or send your measurements. Cutting to length in the yard means less waste, less handling and less saw time on your end.

Both. We sell to general contractors, fabricators, body shops, municipalities and homeowners. There is no account requirement and no minimum order to talk to us.

On or near the harbor, galvanized is usually worth it. Salt air will find untreated carbon steel quickly. Call and describe where the material is going and we will tell you honestly whether you need the coating.

Let's Discuss Your Next Project

Tell us what you need and where it is going in Portland. We will confirm stock, cut it to size, and either have it waiting at the yard or run it up to your site.
